Alexandria
The Pearl of the Mediterranean, rich in Greco-Roman history, featuring the famed Library of Alexandria, Qaitbay Citadel, and underwater antiquities.
Why visit Alexandria
- The Bibliotheca Alexandrina and the modern edge of the Corniche
- The Roman Theatre and the catacombs of Kom el Shoqafa, the most complete underground necropolis in Egypt
- The Citadel of Qaitbay and the streets of the old harbour
- The submerged museum and the lighthouse at the eastern end of the corniche
- The Mediterranean and the seafood — the city was a capital of the world for its fish
Getting there
Alexandria has its own international airport, 45 minutes from the city centre and about 2.5 hours from Cairo. The tram along the Corniche and the beaches is the fastest way to move between the sights, and a day trip from Cairo is possible but leaves little time in the city.
Best time to visit
March to May and September to November, when the Mediterranean is warm enough to swim and the summer heat has eased. Alexandria is a city of the north — it is noticeably cooler and damper than Cairo or Luxor, and a winter weekend in the city is pleasant.
