Why visit Cairo

  • The Giza plateau — the pyramids, the Sphinx and the Grand Egyptian Museum
  • The Egyptian Museum in Tahrir and the Al-Azhar Park, the oldest park in the city
  • Coptic Cairo, the Hanging Church and the Ben Ezra Synagogue
  • Khan el-Khalili, the bazaar that has not changed its trade in centuries
  • A Nile dinner cruise or a felucca ride past the illuminated citadel

Getting there

Cairo International Airport (CAI) is 45 minutes from downtown and 60 minutes from the Giza plateau. The metro runs from the airport to the city centre for a fraction of the price of a taxi, and a private driver for the day is the practical choice for the pyramids and the old Cairo sites together.

Best time to visit

October to April. The winter days are warm and bright, and the site of the pyramids is at its best in the low morning sun. July and August are hot but the crowds are thinner and the prices of the private tours are lower.

Frequently asked questions

Half a day for the Giza plateau — the three pyramids, the Sphinx, the valley temple and a panoramic view from the viewpoint. Add the Grand Egyptian Museum and you need the better part of a day, which is what the full-day tours are for.
Yes — it replaced the old Museum of Egyptian Antiquities in Tahrir, with the full Tutankhamun collection and the new Grand Gallery. The tickets are limited per slot, so booking the museum as part of a tour is more reliable than buying at the door.
Cairo is one of the most visited cities in the world and the tourist areas are well patrolled and busy. The usual advice applies: keep your phone away in crowded areas, agree the price of a taxi before you get in, and use the licensed guides at the sites.
Yes, and it is the classic route. The 7-9 day packages travel by sleeper train or by plane along the Nile, so you see Cairo, Luxor and Aswan without backtracking. The domestic flights save a day each way.
