Why visit Edfu

  • The Temple of Horus, the best-preserved temple in Egypt
  • The huge pylon and the court of the offerings
  • The Mammisi, the birth house, with its extraordinary reliefs
  • The Nile cruise stop on the way between Luxor and Aswan
  • The sugar cane fields and the felucca rides on the river

Getting there

Edfu is halfway between Luxor and Aswan on the east bank of the Nile. The Nile cruise boats stop here, and the organised day trip from Luxor takes about three hours each way. The town itself is a short walk from the temple.

Best time to visit

October to March. The temple is open to the sky, so the winter light is what makes the reliefs readable, and the cruise season runs through the same months.
